The stockings were hung…
The stockings were hung by the cardboard fort with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.
This year, we finally started using a living Christmas tree like the ones I had in my youth. I tossed popcorn in a food processor for impromptu snow on the tree, to limited effect.
The cardboard fort illuminated by our tree struck me as a warm place to hang stockings, and surprisingly, a few staples did the trick. Our fort is one of two cardboard structures we’ve kept since our daughter’s summer birthday. When other kids visit, their parents express mild amusement that we have permanent cardboard furniture in our family room. What they really don’t get is that our kids play in them every single day. They are, hands down, the best toys we could ever own.
A half hour after all the presents are opened, they’ll be back playing in the fort.
The best part about Christmas Eve is that Santa has s’mores waiting for him.
