Night Before Christmas

Courtesy of John Malkovich, opening Saturday Night Live (excuse the required 15 second commercial):

Trivia question: What’s worse than shopping for Christmas presents?

Answer: Wrapping the presents.

This is are first ‘real’ Christmas where Santa’s reputation is on the line for our 5-year-old. Holy cow, it took us a long time. Gifts from Mom and Dad are in one style paper, gifts from Santa are in another style, and to save time, we wrapped a bunch of gifts in fabric scraps and tied them off. It’s not like your kid is going to notice anyway while she’s ripping open gifts, right? I recall at some point my parents stopped bothering to wrap Santa’s gifts for their four kids. We got the 1970s equivalent of yellow stickies.

I have very fond memories of my Grandpa putting my gifts in a paper grocery sack and stapling it shut. Nothing wrong with that! Merry Christmas, AJ, Mrs. J, Little Miss and Little Mister!

Santa never wrapped gifts at our house just what ever doesn’t fit in the stocking is artfully arranged.

At our house, Santa’s gifts are not only not wrapped, they’re removed from their original packaging and put together. The putting together the night before is arguably worse then the wrapping, depending on what he’s bringing… It does make the next morning easier, though!
