My most loved and most hated present are the same. The Green Machine. It only became hated when I knocked half of my front teeth out while riding it...my permanent teeth, no less. Now, every few years when I have to have my fillings replaced or touched up, I think of the Green Machine I once loved. Here is a commercial of the original Green Machine.

I remember when I got the Kodak Disc camera - I thought it was so cool! Within weeks it went from being the best gift to being the worst gift because the pictures it took totally sucked. My first lesson in not believing the hype. :-)

The best gift was a Slinky. Aaah, I had an hour of enjoyment when I received my first Slinky. Of course, once my brothers got home (all three of them), it turned into the WORST gift. My mother said, "You've been playing with it for an hour. Give them a chance. What's the worst that could happen?" Well, they got it completely twisted up within 15 minutes. So as a present, it worked for about an hour.

During the Cabbage Patch rush of the 80's, when they were impossible to find, my mom got me one for Christmas and not only that, it looked a lot like me with brown hair, brown eyes, and freckles. I still remember her name...Sherry Casey. I have no idea what happened to her. But I loved her so much at time.

The worst present I ever got was a flashlight. My uncle thought - kids love flashlights - and he was half right. My brother opened his flashlight and was THRILLED (6 year old boy) - I opened my flashlight (8 year old girl) and was not so thrilled. We have a precious family photo capturing the contrasting reactions. I got many more flashlights from my uncle in the years after but those ones all had money or a gift certificate tucked in the empty battery compartment and we all had a good laugh.

One year my mom had us go through all our toys to see what we could give away to those less fortunate than ourselves. She challenged us to not just give what we didn't want, but what we loved most- to share what was most important to us. That year, I gave away my favorite pillow person doll. I cried as I gave to her, but did it knowing that some little girl would love her as much as I did.

That Christmas under the tree, what did I find? The large deluxe version of that same pillow person! I was thrilled! Through that experience my parents taught me the joy in both giving and receiving.

Apparently, like the rest of the 80's, they're back. It was the blonde sweet dreams doll. http://thepillowpeople.com/

When I was little I had a beautiful antique doll about 18 inches tall that had belonged to my Grandmother. She disappeared one year, only to reappear at Christmas with a complete wardrobe of about 12 outfits my Mom and Grandmother had made for her. Not only was I impressed with her new duds, I was relieved I hadn't actually "lost" her somewhere in my room...

When I was seven or eight, on my request my parents gave me Dusty and Nugget for Christmas, a poseable doll and horse. A female doll designed to ride horses and play sports was my idea of a perfect toy.

Since I lived in a rural area with few kids my age nearby, I spent a lot of time with my toys: Star Wars, G.I. Joe, He-Man, Transformers and Lego were the big five. Many of these were Christmas and birthday gifts, but I couldn't begin to sort out which was which.

The one item I am sure we got for Christmas was our first computer, a Commodore 64. This saw a lot of use by me and my older brother, perhaps more than our toys:
