Great posts and links... I'll get those Hawking books for myself I think. Oh, and the Strange Brew clip? As a Canadian I bow to you and say that I'm humbled.

Cheers.

Sigh........my mother in law is one of those..And i have two other friends (unrelated) who have the same issues with their inlaws/parents. Don't knock me when i say....there is much value in being independent in the Baby Boomer generation. Breast feeding is too much work. Working for a wage is more important.....Disposable everything is perfect. My mother in law said she worked so hard (having daycare/babysitters/other family members to watch her kids) for what she has today that she NOW wants to work hard at enjoying what's she's worked hard to get (and she doesnt realize it's at the expense of her grandchildren). But then again HER mom was a pretty cold fish too........

I was really moved by reading about Rick Moranis and his children - giving up such a successful career to care for his children full-time. I agree with you, I'd love to hear his story and more about what it was like for him.

At the same time, I was also really struck by the fact that he gets so many kudoes for stepping up to do what women do every day in most families. If he were a woman, everyone would expect him to put his career on hold while caring for his children. This doesn't make his choices less meaningful or touching, but it does make me take a critical look at responses to his story.

First, I miss Rick Moranis too... but knowing he put his family first after such a tragedy makes me admire him even more.

Second, I was thinking about the costs of raising a child. Here's something they didn't factor in: when I had my daughter I didn't have enough leave to make it "paid maternity leave". When you add up lost wages, plus added costs, it changes the number. Then you add in the additional costs of childcare as the kid grows up because you have to work to put a roof over your head, food, clothing, education... well...it certainly isn't $1300 per year. Unless you live somewhere really, really inexpensive.

Third, I emailed my mother and father-in-law a big thank you for not being those grandparents that couldn't be bothered. She's awesome.

* My favorite Rick Moranis flick is My Blue Heaven. I could watch that every time it's on!

* When we moved to MI from AR we knew we would miss the grandparents. Fortunately, they miss us too! We see them at least once a month!!

* Vinyl Flooring. Hmm. I'd like to see more studies on that.

* I'm always amazed by the interesting felt creations that crafters are always coming up with! Too bad felt is like a dog hair magnet....

* Quintland only happened because TLC wasn't around to produce the reality show!

* Siftables=Awesome!
