Buy Nothing at All (for Christmas)

Here’s a wonderful, free song from Joel Kroeker titled Buy Nothing at All (for Christmas).

I’d never heard of Kroeker, but he seems to be an indie guitar-playing song-writing soft-spoken poet-musician from Canada. Check out some of his performances on Youtube. Well, okay, a few of his songs aren’t soft-spoken.

The lyrics:

There’s a Monopoly board where our lawn used to grow.
The arrows on the sidewalk tell us all where to go.
They’ve led us to a land where the stores never close,
And the employees are spent like a ghost.

The currency cartel is on nobody’s side.
Commercials for happy solutions to buy.
Every want has a price like every month has a flavor.
But the season is stacked in their favor.

So we’re moving out of Park Place,
And a hollow railroad sounds,
And the Boardwalk Corporation is a barren wasted town.
A reunited family feels a New Year’s freedom call.
We can all share in a new reign,
By buying nothing at all…
By buying nothing at all.

Our impotent rulers who we voted in,
Can’t put their kingdom together again.
We’ve been paying through the nose
To serve a king with no clothes,
And we wonder who is running this show?

Our systems evolved through the roof of a mercantile chess board.
Do you feel like a pawn?
Do you feel like a pawn?
Do you feel, do you feel?

So we’re moving out of Park Place
And a hollow railroad sounds,
And the Boardwalk Corporation is a barren wasted town.
A reunited family feels a New Year’s freedom call.
We can all share in a new reign
By buying nothing at all.
By buying nothing at all.

There’s a Monopoly board where our lawn used to grow.
But this Christmastime the stores are all closed.
Cuz we’re spending time together.
We left our wallets at home.
And our joy will rekindle the season’s glow.
A new joy will fuel the fire’s glow.

I found the song at Buy Nothing Christmas.org (and updated the download link in 2009 thanks to the HinesSight blog).

What, buy nothing? Okay, maybe buy Joel’s MP3 albums. Yeah, Amazon links. Amazon downloads are usually less expensive than iTunes, and free of DRM.
