Does flicker annoy you?

No, not Flickr. I mean animated web advertisements that flip images continuously in your peripheral vision while you read a blog.

I ask because I routinely reject such ads on Thingamababy, and then see a gazillion other parenting blogs running the same ads. If it’s no big deal, I’ll accept them and do a much better job of recouping time put into Thingamababy. If it is a big deal, then okay, I feel better about my decision. Personally, I find them a distraction while I’m trying to read. After I’ve looked at the ad, it’s still there doing its thing on every page.

I know some folks use ad-blockers, which is unfortunate because I try to display only relevant parenting ads. The ads are frequently from independent companies you wouldn’t otherwise know about. For some reason, big box stores and major toy companies don’t like me. Go figure!

Oh, and don’t give me the “It’s your blog; do what you want to do,” line. I really want to know whether animated ads bother you.

Flicker ads at the top don’t bother me because I scroll down and ignore them.

At the side, they are so annoying I don’t go to certain sites because of them.

Oh ads that pop up blockers when my mouse pass over them are the worst. Often, the closed gets “stuck” where I can’t get to it and I end up having to refresh the page in order to see the words of the blogger.

I HATE the flicker ads, and one of the reasons I like your site so much is precisely because you don’t have them. And because your ads are so often relevant. Thanks!

They don’t generally bother me but I’m really good at zoning out annoyances. I can see how they can bother others though.

Very annoying, and I will often refresh hoping to get a different ad, and if I don’t will often navigate away without reading what I came to the site to see in the first place. As annoying as music on a site, all music should be available to be turned on but NOT started automatically.

Yup, I find them annoying. Not to the extent that I wouldn’t read a site I genuinely found quite interesting, but if it were just a sort of interesting site, I might not come back.

Meh. As long as it isn’t a quick flicker, doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me are ads that crash my browser-I whine about blogher ads doing that to me all the time. I’ve dropped sites because of shit like that.

I like the type of ads you usually run. I can look to them, but they aren’t irritating.

Yeah, I hate them, especially the mortgage company with the dancing “whatevers” that just dance and dance badly while you try to concentrate on the blog posting – thanks for caring about these things!

Yup, I despise the flicker ads, too. And I’m grateful to you, AJ, not only for your selectivity in choosing your advertisers, but also for avoiding those with flicker/animated advertisements.

They give me a headache. I also would agree that the ones that pop up when you mouse over are annoying because suddenly what you’re reading is covered in an ad.

I hate them! It’s distracting when you are trying to read and makes the blog look cheap and unprofessional. When the big sites like Yahoo and MSN started doing those pop-outs, I thought we hit a desperate new low for ad dollars.

  17. MoJo says:

I really hate those. But I wouldn’t stop reading your blog because you let advertisers use them. I have paid attention to the ads you have now, and I probably wouldn’t if they were the flicker kind. But in these times, who can turn down potential revenue?

  18. Pippin says:

    Bleh. Don’t like them.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE the “slime” ones…

I won’t quit reading the blog if you get them, I’ll just think poorly of you.

    (that’s a joke. well, maybe.)

  19. Inki says:

I’m one of those people who use adblockers (please don’t hate me!). Not because ads on your blog in particular annoy me but since a lot of other sites have very annoying ads, and the blockers don’t discriminate between sites.
I realize that ad revenue is important to bloggers, but you can take consolation from the fact that I wouldn’t typically click on ads anyway, since a lot of US firms (especially smaller ones) don’t ship overseas and I would rather not get the frustration of seeing an ad for something really cool and then not being able to buy it ;-)

I definitely do NOT like those darn flicker ads. I don’t mind the ads you usually have, and in fact don’t mind most ads in general. I just want them to stay in their places and not jump out into the text. Thanks for not having them.

  22. Phil says:

Good call rejecting them. The ads you place say a lot about you as a blogger. If ads are a must to support your blog, make them decent. Kudos
