Your rant is well-placed. Thank you! We lived in Japan for several years, returning to the U.S. this past spring. Since we have family and friends still there, I try to keep up with the news in Japan. When the insurance company, AIG, faced worldwide financial difficulty a few months ago, several Japanese banks came together to address the Japanese AIG branch and ensured the public that they would work things out with the customers. In a nutshell, the industry fixed itself, without need of a government bailout. Another instance of Japanese cultural differences: when a branch of government or a large company faces a scandle of any size, the top man on the totem pole will usually resign within a couple of weeks after it breaks. The cost may be high for him, but his family name retains a semblance of honor and business can continue. We rarely hear about CEOs stepping down voluntarily in our news but it hits the front page in Asia. Can you imagine that happening here in the U.S.? They are not a perfect society (who is?) but we Westerners could learn a thing or two from them. PS: Check out the Daiso hundred yen store (similar to our dollar store but with much better quality; they have their own quality control and product development). There are a couple in Washington State. http://www.daiso-sangyo.co.jp/english/products/ You would LOVE their products!!!

This was worth a rant. And it's your blog. You could go on forever if you wanted. (And I would probably read it.)
