Today draw anything that comes up in your mind

Here’s a clip from the Japan Ad Council. It’s nothing profound, just a reminder that the disconnect between what your toddler draws and what he says he draws is just fine no matter his age.

I love that. It reminds me of a time in first grade when we were supposed to draw a picture, and I left my paper blank to show “an invisible castle in a snow storm”. I was soooo proud of myself because I realized that the blank paper looked exactly like what I saw in my head. I thought I had discovered a new artistic technique, and was excited at how proud the teacher would be. Instead, she accused me of “trying to make trouble” and made me stay in at recess to “finish my work”.

Lucky for me, I was switched to another class a few days later.

my husband did the opposite: an a black page that he called “black bear in a black cave.” except he was older and onery, so he knew he was causing trouble :) I call it creative

Very cool video. It’s true that often we put our own box around what our children should be doing, and not just in art. Our daughter could crawl at school well before she could at home because we were setting her up in OUR parameters and not letting her explore on her own. We’ve learned a lot from her already, and she’s only 14 months old.
