Thinga-Appreciation Giveaway #3 — Books on DVD and Music!
This contest has concluded. Winners were announced here: week 1,
week 2, week 3, week 4. Thanks for participating on Thingamababy.
Now, the original contest text…
Our first giveaway of children’s music has concluded. It’s being replaced with new giveaways for March.
One winner each for the weeks of March 8-14 and 15-21 takes home three Scholastic books on DVD (actually, each DVD contains several stories).

- Curious George Rides a Bike… and More Monkeying Around
Over 60 years have passed since a mischievous little monkey met the man with the big yellow hat, and, our infatuation with Curious George — as curious and naughty as ever — has only gotten stronger. The title tale, adapted from the original classic H.A. Rey/Margaret Rey book, is accompanied by five additional stories sure to please any primate! - Good Night Gorilla & More Great Sleepytime Stories
This modern-day classic of a nighttime zoo escape is based on the book by Peggy Rathman and narrated by Anthony Edwards. Five other stories — all slower-paced to get kids ready for bed — make this DVD the perfect nighttime treat! - Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and More Fun with Letters and Numbers
With a fun and bouncy musical backdrop, kids learn about capital and lowercase letters in the title story, adapted from the colorful best-seller by Lois Ehlert and illustrated by Bill Martin, Jr. Six other jaunty stories add to the learning fun, including Five Creatures, Wild About Books, Inch by Inch, and others.
One winner each week takes home the following children’s music CD for the weeks of March 22-28 and April 29 to April 4.

“Gunnar Madsen, founding member of the a capella group The Bobs, broke into children’s and family music with his delightfully original 1999 release, “Old Mr. Mackle Hackle.” [...] As much for adults to enjoy as children, with fab, sophisticated instrumentals and vocals — some from his a cappella roots — gorgeous melodies, and musical references to classic Elvis, doo-wop, early 1960s rock and 1940s singing cowboys. It’s as witty as all get-out and often unexpectedly touching, too, reflecting Madsen’s gift for marrying zany lyrics with lovely melodies.” — LA Times.
This giveaway is about reader appreciation. To enter, simply read and post
comments as you normally do anywhere on Thingamababy (full details below). I will select one user who
has posted a comment within the past week as a winner. Check out the music and full rules
below…
Giveaway Rules
The contest is open to residents inside and outside* the United
States. *Residents of the International Space Station excluded. Sorry
Peggy, Yuri, Clayton, Daniel, Leopold, Garrett and Sheikh, but we’ll be
happy to ship to your domestic address in the event you win.
The contest will run for four weeks, and who knows, maybe longer with a new slate of children’s CDs.
Officially, the winner will be selected by me based on my own purely
subjective criteria that is free to change from week to week. For the
first week, I will choose a winner at random. If I see a rush of
empty-headed comments being posted, I’ll change the criteria to a true
sense of my personal appreciation, using comment criteria such as
thoughtfulness, educational value or humor.
To be eligible, users must include a valid e-mail address in their
blog comment. Contacted winners must provide their shipping address to
Thingamababy and Sugar Mountain PR for the purpose of shipping the
prize. Ineligible comments are ones identified as spam by my blog
software or that I would normally delete myself due to their spammy or
offensive nature.
Giveaway Schedule
Each of these four giveaways are for user comments posted
Saturday through Friday (Pacific Time) on any blog article anywhere on
Thingamababy.com.
- Giveaway #1: comments posted between March 8 and 14, 2008 (Curious George, Chicka Chicka and Goodnight Gorilla)
- Giveaway #2: comments posted between March 15 and 21, 2008 (Curious George, Chicka Chicka and Goodnight Gorilla)

Those are my son’s favorites! And I’m curious to see Goodnight Gorilla on DVD…how will it rate against this mommy’s version???

It figures they have decided to go to book on DVD instead of book on CD and read-aloud with an actual book :(

Those are on our top 10 list at home. Goodnight Gorilla always makes my daughter giggle, especially when the zookeeper’s wife realizes…
She is not alone…at all!
Love the contests!

MBR, I don’t see much difference between a read-aloud CD/book and a DVD. A child is likely to use each type of media alone. For reading comprehension, I want to be guiding my child, not having her listening to a recorded voice that moves at its own nonsensical pace.
So what is a book-on-DVD? It’s entertainment. As far as video entertainment goes for young children, Scholastic books-on-DVD are my top recommendation (and maybe Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood). The content is safe compared to pop culture offerings (read: mature adult offerings), and the pace is sedate.
By sedate I mean the video books are not filled with rapid fire scene changes (what’s called “MTV style” or “Fox style”) that has become the standard for how TV shows and cartoons are edited today. My unresearched bias is that feeding kids such frantic content contributes to attention deficit issues. So, while I don’t yet show my daughter videos, I recognize most parents do, and Scholastic is a brand I’m comfortable recommending.

My girls love all three of these stories! I’m sure the DVD versions are wonderful. This would be great to win:)

Oooh, we haven’t read any of these! That will be fun. I just realized that I haven’t introduced my daughter to Curious George yet. Hmmm… next time we go to the library we’ll have to get one so that she’ll be familiar with him when we win (wink wink, nudge nudge). Thanks!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom 1 2 3…..
I made a coconut tree out of old coffee cans covered in brown paper, big green paper leaves and foam craft balls painted brown when I was teaching preschool many years ago. The kids got to come up and stick paper letters on the tree..then we sang a silly song :o)
Now I want to do the same thing with my twins….but the coffee we buy comes in bags :o(
OH!! And I remembered the name of the book I talked about in my last comment. It’s called the Post Pregnancy Handbook by Sylvia Brown. I used the suggested homeopathy and it was awesome. After my CS I was up and walking without much pain and everything was running smoothly withing a day. My Dr. was amazed :o)

I think my husband would enjoy the Curious George Book almost as much or more then my 3 1/2 year old son Tyler! He loves reading him books he enjoyed as a child. He’s just a kid inside that tough exterior. I would love to see both of their faces light up if we won these great books. Thanks so much for the opportunity!

What a fun set of DVDs! We just got the Goodnight Gorilla from the Imagination Library! If you haven’t heard of this awesome program to give your child a free book every month of their life until they are 5 years old, then you should definitely check out this website: http://imaginationlibrary.com/ to see if they have the program in your community! :) How’s that for educational and informative? ;)
