Ah. But I love discussing names!

We had our first child's name (boy and girl) chosen well before he was conceived. But I still enjoyed the discussion. I just knew what we woul choose and could not be dissuaded from.

We will stick with the unused girl first name and we have a new boy first name chosen out. But we're still trying to decide on middle names.

I didn't do the survey for the reasons the others have stated. When we had our baby in Nov we went to the birth center with about 10 names we liked, then when we was born we just waited to see which name fit him best. We chose West. And it is funny, I put his baby name list in his baby book and the other names are so not him it is ridiculous.
Good luck!

I agree that there is a danger in giving people the opportunity for input.

Specifically, family members will be disappointed when we don't choose their favorite name. Whereas, if you just announce the name to them, they have fewer expectations.

There are two names on each of our Top Ten lists that the other one of us could concede to accepting under duress, so that's why we're looking for input. As for the other 16 names, well, we just want to rub it in to each other that some people liked one of our other names. It's also a reality check when almost no one likes a name.

Good luck w/ selecting a name. I worry that too many opinions may make you guys over think this decision. I certainly see why some people keep their names secret until the baby is born. You always think they have some great name, only to be disappointed when "Samuel" arrives. No offense to the Sams who read this post...
