Six Photos from my Boy’s Birth

My son was born today at 6:15 a.m. after 12 hours and 15 minutes of serious labor. The kid is 8lbs. 7 ounces, 20 inches long and is covered with ever-so-light peachy fuzzy hair. And, he only caused his mother a second degree tear. Woo hoo!

Here are a few quick pictures, kind of graphic if you’re not accustomed to childbirth…

Photo of the baby being pulled by the doctor out of his mother.

Photo of the baby less than a second after coming out of his mother.

Photo of the doctor clearing the baby's airway.

That super-blue gloved person is a midwife. There are only 3 or 4 seconds between splash down and suck out, then the baby gets scooped up in a towel and placed on mom’s chest still bloody. One good sneeze and you could be asking, "Hey, where did that baby come from?"

Photo of the baby crying on his mother's chest, still bloody.

Photo of the baby cleaned off resting on his mother's chest.

Photo of the baby sleeping while holding a friend's pinky finger.

All except that last one were obviously taken in the seconds after birth.

The name? Wilson, after his two great grandfathers (Wilbur and Judson). I fought for Flynn to the very end. It was also favored by our first nurse of the evening who drummed up a list of her favorite Gaelic names for us. I did win a concession that my unusued favorite names will be bestowed upon any and all future household pets. Oh well!

Now, back to the hospital…

Congrats! He’s totally cute. I love the picture of him suckin’ his thumb on momma’s chest. Now I see it wasn’t just creativity that got me two points on the Wilson onesie design idea. :o)

Congratulations! I am getting over my aversion to the name (makes me think of Tom Hanks’ ball on that damn island — I was pulling for Cyrus, my husband’s name). Getting over it is easier now that I have a much more adorable association!

Welcome to the world Wilson! What a happy day. Hope that everyone is getting caught up on rest. I have to share with you that my 2 y/o daughter wanted to see the pics of Wilson, and at the one with him sucking his thumb, she pointed and said, “Baby’s mommy.” Since there are not really any definitive features evident, I asked her how she knew it wasn’t the baby’s daddy, and she shook her head forcefully and adamantly stated, “No! Mommy.” I was just amazed/impressed by the innate ability of little ones to identify a mommy when they see one. Or maybe she just got lucky…… :-) Anyway, thanks for sharing the pics. Look forward to hearing all the upcoming baby news.
