Can you Identify this Baby Mobile?

Update: The mobile was identified by Thinga-reader Martina. Read the follow-up review.

When you take a feline father…

A TV screenshot showing a man with a cat's face dressed in an aviator's hat and goggles. Lots of dials and gizmos are visible behind him.

And a human mother…

A TV screenshot showing of a human woman smiling. Computerized lights are visible behind her.

and put them together in a hover van for 12 years you get…

A TV screenshot showing five kittens crawling around in a basket, each wearing a cute ribbon around its neck.

and this cool multi-colored goldfish baby mobile…

A TV screenshot showing a baby mobile with five fish of different solid colors and large white and blac eyes. They somewhat resemble goldfish.
Does anyone recognize that mobile? I’d like to know if it’s sold commercially or was handmade for the TV show in which it appeared. [enlarged view]

Anyone? Anyone?

These screen shots are, of course, from season 3 of the recently revived BBC scifi series, Doctor Who, in an episode called Gridlock. The mobile is seen briefly at 4:40 minutes into this Youtube clip. The fish remind me a little of Dr. Seuss.

The episode itself is not about the cat family though. In New New York on New Earth just 5 billion years from now, life is kind of grim. In the “undercity” below New New York people spend decades hovering in toxic smog-infused gridlock, living self-sufficiently in their cars, going round and round waiting for freeway exits that will never open. The kittens are “children of the motorway,” having never seen sunlight or touched the ground.

The whole episode is online if you care to watch. The only background you need to know is that a man who calls himself “The Doctor” travels in time and space with his human companion Martha (who is from our time). Oh, and a sonic screwdriver proves indispensable in many a situation.

Incidentally, Doctor Who is a children’s show (more for a teen or Harry Potter audience) that aired from 1963 to 1989 and was revived in 2003. While there is a fair amount of violence, it’s nothing like the harshness on American TV. And, like most incarnations of the Doctor over the years, this one manages to defeat the universe’s worst foes with brains instead of brawn.

Doctor Who airs on the SciFi channel, but the next season won’t start until summer or fall 2008. It pays to have an an all-region DVD player and a neighborhood video store that rents British imports, or the inclination to buy the DVDs from Amazon UK to watch them many months before most folks in North America. Of course, I own the third series via a more traditional source, Grandma.

Looks very similar to the the IKEA Korall mobile to me. I’ve seen it here in Australia, but it looks like it’s available in the US too
It’s part of a whole series of nursery items … in case you are looking for a decorating theme for your nursery and are keen on weird looking fish objects.

Wow, thanks Martina. This ending to the mystery is better than any punchline I could have written. Who knew IKEA would be alive and well in the year 5,000,000,053?

I feel like I attended a party last night and asked about the scrumptious hors devours, only to find out they were slices of McDonald’s cheeseburger. Still, it’s a cool mobile.

With a name like “KORALL Mobile multicolor” I wonder why it didn’t turn up when I googled for “baby fish mobile.”

I loved Dr. Who growing up. The original. My favourite was the curly-haired guy. That show scared me (kind of like the original Battlestar did…oooh scary tin-can looking cylons, see how their lights hypnotize….)

Glad you found the source of the mystery mobile!

“… this one manages to defeat the universe’s worst foes ***without*** brains instead of brawn”

I’m assuming the “without” there is a typo? Perhaps “with”?

As for me, Tom Baker AKA curly haired guy is also my favorite… but I also have a fondness in my heart for Jon Pertwee as he was my “first” doctor… I haven’t let myself get into the newer episodes. I’m addicted to too many things already. Gotta save some good series for DVD in a few years, right?

Whoops, that’s what I get for blogging late at night. Typo fixed, thanks.

As for Tom Baker, the new series won’t ever have as good an exchange at this one:

The Doctor : “Now drop your weapons or I’ll kill him with this deadly jelly baby.”
    Warrior: “Kill him, then.”
    The Doctor: “What?”
    Warrior: “Kill him, then.”
The Doctor : “I don’t take orders from anyone.” [Eats jelly baby] “Take me to your leader.”

Meanwhile, if you look on fan sites for David Tennant quotes, they’re all from real life, not the show. But still, hands down, I like the new series a lot more.
