CPSC Denies Lead Test Reliability

On the same day that Consumer Reports reported that three home lead paint test kits proved to be useful for consumers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced such kits are unreliable.

Huh, is this the same CPSC that issued a crib recall the same day the Chicago Tribune called to investigate inaction on crib deaths that date back to 2005? You know, that recall it rushed to announce before there was a consumer remedy in place? The same CPSC that has been gutted and become a friend of industry?

If you’re new to the controversy, read this mirror of a New York Times article that is nothing short of damning for the CPSC and every administration that has worked to shrink the agency, most especially the current administration.

So, what incentive would there be to portray testing kits as worthless? Well, if a significant number of parents began testing their toys at home and began finding results that deserve professional analysis, several things happen:

1. Expectations for the CPSC skyrocket when the agency is at its smallest, weakest point in its history.

2. Consumer confidence plummets (even lower).

3. An economic system that relies on cheap overseas imports begins to crumble.

It is overwhelmingly in corporate and governmental interests to keep us believing products made overseas (and domestically for that matter) are safe. So, who do you believe? More importantly, who do you trust?

I trust Consumer Reports. It will evaluate what the CPSC has to say and if Consumer Reports is wrong, it will issue a correction. That, my friends, is called integrity. But if Consumer Reports is correct, well, it would be par for the course for our decrepit government agency charged with consumer protection.

    I still have some hesistancy about CR after the whole car seat fiasco. I realize the did print a retraction but wonder how well thought out some of their testing is as well. Not that I disagree with your comments about the CPSC.

    Consumer Reports is in the business of casting a critical eye on consumer products. In other words, they make many companies very angry on a regular basis. CR has its work picked over with a fine tooth comb. I’m surprised such “errors” as the car seat testing aren’t in the news more often. It’s a testament to their reliability.

    I’ll be giving serious consideration to the one child car seat that survived CR’s unintentional 70 mph tougher-than-government-standards crash test. I just can’t guarantee the person who hits my car will honor the government’s wish that we all crash our cars at 35 mph. Again, just who is the government looking after with these unrealistic tests? It’s not us.
