I, too, loved Free to be as a child (the record...didn't know there was a movie for a long time) and still enjoy the songs and stories from time to time. Let's just keep in mind that the prospect of parenthood isn't the only reason children should play with dolls if they want to. The fact that they *want* to is enough. I never thought about this until it was pointed out to me by a gay friend in college.

Wow did this ever bring up memories for me (being a child of the '70s and all). So much so that it prompted me to do a video search for all of the clips from the Television special. My 2-year old daughter really enjoy the "Ladies' First" story.

Thank you for bringing me on a lovely walk down memory lane!

Hey Thanks!

I didnt' know there was a book or a video either. What can, I say I grew up without a TV and that Record was one of my favourites. I still remember almost all of the words to all of the songs. Here are a couple of other songs on the album about finding your own way in the world...

"Don't Dress Your Cat In An Apron"
"My Dog Is A Plumber"

I played the video clip as my 5 year old son came in the room this morning... when it ended, he said, "Hey Mom! That's neat how it's just like the book about the older boy who wanted a doll, but not a naked one."

The book is also "William's Doll" by Charlotte Zolotow with illustrations by William Pene DuBois, I think.

Another good book about gender roles affecting kids is "Oliver Button is a Sissy" by one of our favorites, Tomie dePaola.

My son has both of these books as well as a range of dolls, dollhouses, kitchen toys, sewing sets... and knights, pirates, dinosaurs and trains.

I think the idea is that it's okay for boys to play with dolls if they want to just as it's okay for girls to play with train sets. :)
He has a great singing voice anyway.
