Doll houses are good for boys and girls. It allows them to work through sibling/family relationships. Guns are good for boys and girls it allow them to express natural aggressive instincts. Toy soldiers are good for boys and girls it too allows them to express these natural instincts. (A child playing with blocks does not necessarily become a builder, a child playing with horses does not necessarily become a jockey, what they play with is not what they will become, it is a way of expressing themselves). I recommend a book called “A Good enough Parent, by Bruno Bettleheim. It has an excellent chapter on toys and play, amongst other things.

Congrats on the little boy! I am also have a little boy due in February. I was certain mine was a girl and a little shocked to find out it was a boy. We are happy either way. I still get a little depressed when I see all those cute little fru-fru dresses in the store. To be practical, though, they would rarely get worn. We haven’t even started our name battle. I had to pre-veto names such as Elvis, Seven, Slevin and Kong. My husband thinks he’s cute. Although I did like the Optimus Prime guy who posted earlier. My family is full of crappy male names, so we are going to have to be original. I don’t blame you for disliking Wesley. I was a big fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Wesley was a totaly wuss on that show. However, he did grow a pair on Angel. Anyway, good luck with everything!

I like Gamera. Don't like Wesley. But most guy names, I don't really like. We sorta settled on Darwin at one point, but we never ended up needing it anyway.

My girls wear boy stuff all the time-even when they are dressed in pink, people ask if they're boys, so I gave up long ago. I just give stuff away to centers that support low income families mostly-freecycle became too much of a hassle.

And wow! A boy! I guess now you'll need to get those little tents. :)

A Little Mister? After all those cute girl nicknames you solicited? *Smile* Ah well...

I was really hoping for a girl for our first (likely only) child, but I've come to appreciate the rambunctious energy and excitement of a little boy. We use the nickname "Man-child" when we don't wish to use a name. (Eleven pounds at birth, he's still off the growth charts for height - hence the man in Man-child.)

I think a toy tree house full of squirrels might be a little nuts, but just in their pantry. Actually I think it's a great way to have your son model and play through some of the family changes. Nobody thinks twice about boys playing with airport play sets, or auto garage sets, etc. Why limit their play to "work" settings? Family is important to boys and men too. Go for it!

Congratualtions!

We are almost in the same situation as you guys - except in reverse. Our son will be 2 1/2 when our girl is born at the end of February.

Speaking of the gender thing... I want to get my son a dollhouse for Christmas. He loves his barn and makes the animals "talk" to each other. I think he would enjoy playing out all the changes about to happen in our house. My husband thinks a dollhouse is too "girly" of a toy for his son. I have found a "dollhouse" type toy that looks like a treehouse and is inhabited by a family of squirrels dressed like people.

Guys, is that masculine enough? Or am I just nuts?!

Good luck with the name thing. I think boy names are so much easier than girl names.

Congratulations to you!!! As a parent to three boys under the age of four, I can attest that the diaper changes can be a challenge -- especially when your baby is a newborn -- it must be the cool air that kicks them into action.

WWBD, I am a little apprehensive when my daughter chooses less-girlish clothes if it’s a day when I will be the sole care provider. I sometimes get the impression people look at us and think, “That poor clueless man dresses his daughter like a boy.” But, she wears what she wears.
