Whatcha Think? It’s a Complete Web Site Redesign

Welcome to phase one of Thingamababy’s web site redesign.

Please share your thoughts by leaving a comment below or shooting me an e-mail.  Knowing your likes and dislikes is appreciated. Colors? Font size? Logo? Like it? Hate it? We will be revising or replacing the logo and adjusting other tidbits in the phase 2 "fine tuning" of the design.

A thumbnail screenshot of the old Thingamababy design.

Goodbye old design. Today is a dark day for fans of white space.

Kudos go to Buz Carter of Pizza by the Slice for the redesign, from the coding to the illustrations. It’s all him. And I’ve never met the guy. Behold the power of e-mail.

I am absolutely blown away by Buz’s artistic wizardry and equally shocked that his talent goes largely untapped as he toils away in an office job doing programming for a dot com.

Corresponding with the creative side of Buz’s brain is like being the proprietor of a sidewalk fruit stand, polishing your apples as you watch two deliverymen carry a large pane of glass quietly across the street as a high speed car chase barrels down the road. The impending destruction of the glass would seem timidly cliché if it were not followed by watermelons, oranges and papaya launching into the air as your livelihood explodes on the front fender of a 1968 Ford Mustang G.T. 390 Fastback just before you are run over by a Hollywood film crew in hot pursuit.

I mean to say Buz channels a Dennis Miller-esque stream-of-consciousness, just a tad. Here is a comment Buz made about an early diaper pin sketch for the redesign:

"the diaper pin was a whim, a priori, an anachronism true, but so what, was an excuse to doodle it. also knew it was two young, your tike is getting you there, you’re aging even as we read this. soon, her own cellphone, the car keys, "I’ll call, I said I would", and you pacing the floor. sorry. that’s months away, relax."

But I eventually wore him down through Sleestak ruminations and Calgon commercials to the point where he began talking like a nerdy programmer. He’s an interesting mix of analysis and creativity.

Anyhow, please share your reaction to the design via the comment link below or the e-mail link at top right. We’re all adults here. We can take it.

I don’t see the new design!

If you don’t see a smiling child at the upper left of this page, you need to flush your browser cache and retrieve a new copy of our stylesheet.

First, hit CTRL-R to reload the page. If that doesn’t work, leave Thingamamaby, perform the steps below, and then return to Thingamamaby.

In Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > (under "Browsing History" or "Temporary Internet Files") > Delete Files.

In Firefox, click Tools > Options > Privacy > (in Private Data) Clear Now. Be sure the box next to "Cache" has a check mark, but important stuff like your cookies and saved passwords are NOT checked.

This should force your browser to delete the old design and fetch the new design when you revisit the web site.

I like the typography for Thingamababy but overall the site now seems too “busy” with all of the different colors and images. The old site was clean and clear-cut. Illustration is a good idea but maybe not this style.

Love the illustrations but imho the orange and green take away from them. Maybe it’s just because orange seems really jarring to me.

My vote would also be for the content area to be wider and skip the blue vertical stripes on the side. But that is just my opinion.

    Thanks for the great blog!

Overall, I love it. The illustration is great. I do agree you could cut down on the number of fairly bold colors, perhaps cutting out the hot orange as a stripe/background color altogether.

    Nice work.

You need to update your comment verification to match the new logo/style…

Love the illustration up top, that is great. I agree with the others, you could cut down on the bold and remove the blue strips on the side, leaving more room for the content.

Great Blog – Love the tips.

I like the overhaul–aesthetically cool and functionally sleek. Yes, the blue stripes (or at least the little hearts) could go to declutter a bit.

Also, you still need to add a title for your main page (in the title bar at the very top, mine still shows the browser name, Mozilla Firefox).

The blue stripes on the sides don’t really seem to go with the rest, color-wise, and style-wise.

The logo is cool, and the orange is fine with me (just a bit shocking to see for the first time!).

If this were my site, I’d use a font with serifs for the main text. It’s much easier to read, and a little easier on the eyes.

I like the logo a lot, KEEP IT! The background is kind not so good. I am a fan of keep it simple and keep it nice. Color is good, just keep it simple and clean. The content area could be bigger, with the side bars smaller (if possible). I like how the only thing on todays site is todays topic and I can just go to the archives for previuos entries.

Rosemary, thanks for catching the TITLE tag glitch. That’s my flub in how I implemented Buz’s design in my blogging software. Whew, that would have become a big problem if not caught fast. It’s fixed now.

Everyone, thanks for all the great feedback thus far. Keep your thoughts coming.

I enjoy the redesign – it is refreshing. I love the new logo/name art and the added coloring. I would agree with others that the content section of the web page needs to be wider – possibly only have one side bar and not both! Keep up the great work – I check thing a ma baby every day and it never ceases to encourage me as a first time parent (4 mo. old daughter).

At first I found all the colors a bit shocking. I guess I had gotten used to the old look, although the first time I went to your site then, I thought it was a bit spare. But then I figured, “Well, he’s a guy. Don’t they tend to like things simple?” And I commenced to getting used to it.

Looking at it a while longer, I find the blue bars growing on me, even with the busy hearts. I think it warms up the site a bit more, although it seems to mask that you, the site originator, are male. It sort of feminizes things (from my pov). I might miss the bars if you got rid of them all the way, but I’d be interested to see how things would look if it were possible to only have them on the left, not the right (not exactly easy to do with the way the CSS is set up, perhaps).

I do think that I’m in favor of minimzing the Orange in the sidebars as one way to declutter without scrapping whole elements of this design. I like the orange against the blue as it exists in the banner and the background… but I think its use along the side may be a touch much.

Oh wow, it looks so nice! I thought i was at the wrong website at first, surprise, surprise!

I like how the name is done, very cool!

Maybe add a little girl to go along with the boy at the top?

    Very cute and fun!

I like the new redesign, however, I don’t like having to click on something everytime I want to read an entire article. Because I normally read all of your articles, whether they pertain to my childs age or not!
