I totally agree with you that coffee tables have no place in a home with kids. I love my coffee table but I love my baby's easily-bumped head more...got to think of how we're gonna find a new home for it :-)

I'm with you on the no coffee table thing. We disassembled ours and tucked it into a closet in order to make the living room a play area, and we haven't missed it at all. In fact, we're pretty sure that when we need the closet space, we'll get rid of the coffee table instead of putting it back in the living room!

Oops, we put food and drink ON TOP. The toys are hidden inside.

We Craigslisted our coffee table after having shoved it against the wall for over 6 months. But we finally replaced it with two rattan cubes from Target. We store toys inside, place coffee mugs and bowls of snacks inside (our almost 2 year old is much more reliable now), and sit on them when we're short on seating.

Cute, yes. Lush, definitely. I got similar results by covering my barbarian table with a throw rug (bought for the express purpose of covering it... but prior to baby) and then topping that with a throw blanket. The throw rug was nice and thick, though not nearly as rounded and padded as the table topper thingy. The edges of the rug hang over my table just a tad. Putting the throw blanket on top of it makes it impossible for my tyke to accidentally pull the rug off the table. The blanket is a thick, soft not-quite-chenille thing and hangs quite low over the edges of the table. It rounds out the edges of the rug creating a natural edge "guard". So when little man does bump his head standing up too quickly, it's no big thingy... and the table looks really nice too. Still quite usuable for coffee, water, magazines, chinese food, books, feet, sacrifices to the gods and what have you.
