My son loved making train tracks but never drove trains on them. If I'd glued it down it would have ruined the fun. Ebay is a great source for used trains and track. Be sure the styles are compatible- brio/Thomas/one style of Target work well together. The other Target one is smaller and doesn't fit. Son #2 never uses it, so we'll probably put it back on eBay one of these days.

Yep, I have a starter IKEA train set and a train table and nothing is glued down. I'll report in after Little Miss has played with it a bit and I know more about tracks. I found the IKEA track incompatible with another no-name Thomas-compatible track.

We bought some track at Ikea that was prefectly compatible with Thomas, once we figured out what size Thomas figurines we were supposed to buy (there are 2 sizes). The smaller sizes work with the Ikea tracks.

Is it okay to just leave a comment instead of emailing? lol

We no longer have a wooden train set (I'll get to the why in a minute) but when we decided to buy one we did opt for the less expensive Target brand that the Thomas cars are compatible with. We also opted for a train table because we felt that our boys would be more comfortable playing with the train set on something that was elevated (versus the floor).

We had originally intended on permanently attaching the rail to the train table -- once you get the track put together (it can take a while!), you don't want your sweet little loved one to take it apart because for some reason train track sections are obviously more fun than the actual entire train track put together. Unfortunately we never got around to permanently attaching the track to the table and I got tired of putting the damn train track back together 20x/day. Not to mention having to listen to my kids cry because part of the track had fallen over or something...Thus the reason we no longer have a wooden train set.

Perhaps we'll try again next year. We still have the train table. The track itself only cost about $20. And given our experience, I'm glad we didn't invest more than that.

Hi! My son is only a year, but I'm wondering about the train sets too for future reference. I hope you'll be posting your findings! Thanks, love the site.
