Book Review: I Love My Daddy Because… by Laurel Porter-Gaylord

Title: I Love My Daddy Because…
Format: Board book
Author: Laurel Porter-Gaylord
Illustrator: Ashley Wolff
Ages: birth to preschool

Cover of the book: I Love My Daddy Because. Depicted is a lion and cub.Plot: The relationship between father and child is depicted using paintings of animal papa-baby pairs on each page. The name of the animal is printed at the top of pages while narration along the bottom describes each scene. For example, the description of an emperor penguin’s chick huddling under a skin fold at dad’s feet reads, “[I love my daddy because] He helps me safe and warm.”  Meanwhile, a gray wolf standing with his cub while howling at the moon has a description of: “He sings me songs.”

Reaction: At 22 months, when Little Miss sees a pair of animals of differing sizes she shouts, “Momma! … Baby!” We have plenty of books cementing the mommy-baby connection and my wife has cunningly reinforced this bond at every turn. Little Miss has been brainwashed by the mommy industrial complex. I love this book because… dads finally get their due.

OK, to be fair, Mom bought this book and reads it to Little Miss. I can’t stomach such self-serving stuff. A better idea is a book titled, “I Love My Parents Because… links:

Why do you prefer the “I love my parents because” title better? Lots of children don’t have 2 parents in their lives…

I prefer “I love my parents because” because… my daughter’s family has 2 parents.
