&lt;p&gt;Consider that a b-zillion people toss $5 for a single meal at McDonalds every week or $20 for two seats at the movie theatre (plus babysitter costs). When I compare the selfish purchases in my life against cool stuff I could give my daughter, my daughter wins much of the time. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;(Of course, as I said, I acquired the slippers as a hand-me-down, and the clown costume in the photo was a garage sale find. Maybe I&#039;ll write something someday about the REALLY cool stuff I&#039;d buy if I were independently wealthy.)&lt;/p&gt;
