That rattle is made in Mexico! My baby girl has a one in the shape of a chicken and it's cute, but I'm going to try to get a look at the content... Where did you buy it?

AJ - saw your article, ran home, cut open my daughter's (long-since-gone-to-the-bottom-of-the-toy-pile) rattle...and found the very same thing. And since you're 2600 miles away from me, these things must be all over the place. Yeesh.

That's pretty crappy construction. I would presume [like you did] that it's a ball or bell of some sort...not trash. Geez.

I'm all for clever and safe reuse of materials... but I occassionally washed the rattle and assumed the "bell" inside wouldn't rust or decay and that any fluids going in would be coming out clean.

A baby sucks on everything, especially a rattle. Juices are surely going in, and coming out. The bottle cap didn't look like it was cleaned, and I don't think the rust began after purchase.

That strikes me as a positive surprise -- good reuse of available materials.
