Baby Rattle Surprise

Ever wonder what makes a rattle jingle? Believe me, you do not want to know.

Shortly before Little Miss was born, we bought a couple rattles at an upscale womens’ boutique. Mom was using a gift certificate and we had a few stray dollars to burn. Each rattle is composed of colorful woven plastic strands. No manufacturer information was attached to the rattles, but in hindsight, I’m guessing they were made south of the border.

A multicolored rattle compsoed of plastic strandsLittle Miss outgrew the rattles a few months ago. Because the rattles aren’t watertight, not easily washable, and thus not reusable by some other baby, I dissected them. I was going to cut out the metal bells inside and toss them in a drawer… maybe use them in a future cat toy.

Two beans and a rusty bottle cap from what appears to be a Mexican fruit drinkSo I was a little surprised to discover that the rattle’s “bell” was two beans and a rusty bottlecap. Blech. That’s what Little Miss has been sucking on all these months?

That strikes me as a positive surprise — good reuse of available materials.

I’m all for clever and safe reuse of materials… but I occassionally washed the rattle and assumed the “bell” inside wouldn’t rust or decay and that any fluids going in would be coming out clean.

A baby sucks on everything, especially a rattle. Juices are surely going in, and coming out. The bottle cap didn’t look like it was cleaned, and I don’t think the rust began after purchase.

That’s pretty crappy construction. I would presume [like you did] that it’s a ball or bell of some sort…not trash. Geez.

AJ – saw your article, ran home, cut open my daughter’s (long-since-gone-to-the-bottom-of-the-toy-pile) rattle…and found the very same thing. And since you’re 2600 miles away from me, these things must be all over the place. Yeesh.

That rattle is made in Mexico! My baby girl has a one in the shape of a chicken and it’s cute, but I’m going to try to get a look at the content… Where did you buy it?
